My name is Chantal Jackson. I am a Somatic Experiencing trauma therapist and counsellor. I have a background in coaching, spiritual care and therapeutic relaxation massage that also inform how I work.
What this work shows me every day is that what we all need most is to be heard and accepted just as we are. This helps us feel our own 'okayness' and this in turn allows us to access our deeper knowledge and wisdom and strength.
I also know that it helps to have some guidance from outside, to make a plan, to look at the deeper questions, but this is must always in service of coming closer to our own strength and wisdom.
I find that working somatically (bringing awareness to the body) is another way of accessing inner strength and wisdom. For some people this way of working is deeply transformational: creating deep and lasting change inside and in life.
My aim is to accept everyone who comes to see me as you are and to bring my self as well as my knowledge, skills and experience to help you find what you need to get where you want to be.
BACKGROUND
I came to this work, like most people, through my own journey. Searching for a way through long-term chronic illness and healing from childhood and illness-related trauma led me towards Somatic Experiencing, a modality I have come to love for its simplicity and its trust of our innate capacity for healing. For me it is miraculous the way our body and mind knows what it needs if we can slow down enough to hear and have someone with us who has some sense of what direction might help our body find its way. It is my privilege to share this with you.
I also appreciate the qualities of more traditional counselling and talk therapy. To have somewhere that is quiet, where one can be listened to and heard can be deeply healing. But for me, I found I often wanted more than just being heard: I wanted someone who could give me guidance, help me learn some skills and connect me to resources. There was always, for me, a time to be heard and a time when I wanted someone to help me take things in hand and make them better.
So that is what I offer to you: a listening presence so you can hear your own inner self and tools and when you want them, guidance to support your learning and growth. This guidance can be reflections, exercises, books or online resources, insights from what I have been taught from therapeutic, psychological and spiritual (Buddhist mostly) teachers.
I work with individuals, couples, parents and children. Having good relationship with ourselves is key, but there is also much healing to be found within our everyday relationships. Helping people to make sense of the confusions of relationship and parenthood and develop a wider understanding, skillset and strength in these areas can bring a deep sense of connection and peace. And I am passionate about helping children get on top of traumatic response early, before it is more deeply wired into their system and their lives.
To see people connect to their wisdom and inner strength, to find what is true and see people thrive gives me a deep joy and is what keeps me here wanting to support those who feel drawn to work with me in these ways. It is my wish that when people come to see me they feel known for who they are and respected for their courage in meeting their life. That's how I have also wanted (and often received) to be attended to in my own dark hours.
I also work in aged-care and have coordinated Spiritual Support Services at a local hospital. End of life and spiritual care remind me of the deeper context within we live: the miraculous and mysterious way in which our lives unfold and the importance of the beliefs, practices, and deep aspirations that guide us through the good and the shaky times of life. Attention to the spiritual and sacred is woven through the ways I work in all settings.
